Prosecutors say these parents are responsible for strangling their 10-week-old boy on Christmas Day. They were ordered held on bond last week.
The baby boy passed away in a Denver Children’s Hospital on Saturday.
The baby’s mother, 23-year-old Kayla Jean Edwards, was charged with deliberate homicide and assault on a minor. Her bond was set at $350,000.
The father, Brandon Tony Edwards, 28, was charged with two counts of felony aggravated assault and one of count of assault on a minor. His bond was $200,000.
According to KTVQ news reports-
- The Edwards were arrested on Christmas night after police responded to a call that an infant was not breathing and had suspicious injuries. Billings police arrived at the Terry Avenue residence just after 8 p.m. to find AMR and fire personnel performing CPR on the child.
- The baby was reportedly blue in color and was transported to St. Vincent Healthcare for treatment.
- Baby was later flown to Denver Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead on Sunday due to severe bleeding in the brain.
Charging documents state that Brandon Edwards told police he was not in the room when his infant son had stopped breathing.
Kayla Edwards reportedly told officers that she had been changing the baby’s diaper in the living room when the child began gasping for air and turning blue.
She called 911 and denied that anything else had happened to the child, either on purpose or accidentally.
During an initial interview with the baby’s father, he initially denied seeing anything that happened to the baby.
Documents state that Brandon Edwards later broke down sobbing and admitted he heard his wife yell at the baby to “shut up,” followed by Kayla Edwards hitting the baby in the back of the head and choking him with her hands.
The baby, who has a twin sister, then stopped breathing, Brandon Edwards told police, court records state.
Brandon Edwards also allegedly admitted that he and his wife had squeezed both of the twins’ throats in the past.
He also told investigators that he and his wife had tortured the babies by turning their car seats upside down with them strapped inside, documents state.
Kayla Edwards and Brandon Edwards remain at the Yellowstone County Jail. The state took custody of their surviving child-
