ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. (PIX11) — A mother was sentenced Tuesday after scheming to receive donations for her son who she pretended had cancer.

Sandy Nguyen, 29, was sentenced Tuesday to 90 days with work release, meaning she’ll work during the day and sleep in jail at night.

Nguyen’s plot was uncovered when a doctor at the Children’s Hospital of Denver heard about Jaiden’s story, and checked records came up empty.

Nguyen convinced her 6-year-old son Jaiden he had cancer and convinced family, friends and the greater community the child was receiving treatment since Sept. 2012.

Jaiden told investigators that he believed he had terminal cancer and received chemotherapy at night while he was sleeping. Before school every morning, his mother would shave his head.

With the help of community and school fundraisers, Nguyen raised $25,000. She used $16,000 of that money for trip to Disneyland with family.
