Heather,
I am a CASA/GAL (Court Appointed Special Advocate/Guardian ad Litem). We are individuals that are completely independent of any person or entity involved in child neglect and/or abuse situations. We are appointed with the sole duty to advocate for what is in the best interest of the CHILD. Although we are often seen with Social Workers, Attorneys, etc., we are in NO way aligned with any. With that said, you should seriously consider calling your local child protection agency. You can find the applicable number(s) by doing an internet search including your state, and “child protective services”, or “report suspected child abuse or neglect.” In addition, you should know that states usually have laws that prevent disclosure to anyone regarding the individual(s) that make the report(s). Either questions or concerns regarding disclosure of information will be available to you online or when you call; be sure to ask so you can be comfortable enough to be candid. Even then, you can still do it anonymously if you choose.
To address your question about contacting an attorney or child protective services (CPS), I would recommend the later, at least initially. My reason is this, if there truly is something of concern taking place (CPS) is the entity most equipped to intervene. By this, I mean, they can investigate and file, based on their findings, which is recognized by the courts. Whereas, an attorney is retained to advocate on your behalf, regarding your concerns. I am certainly not trying to minimize the role of any attorney in this situation. I am merely trying to suggest that every state has an organization designed to address these particular concerns, as well as being properly equipped with the tools to assist all the parties involved.
Please, if you have serious, valid concerns, do something. Anything.
I sincerely admire your ability to seek insight from others.

Thanks for your post, “How Sex Abuse Changed Me.” It shows just how damaging sex abuse is and how damaging it is to tell and not be believed. Great work!
